Sani Chartudomdej
GSE Thailand Team Member 2006

Personal Profile

I was born, raised and educated in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. Our house, where I live with my mother, brother and cousins, is located on a river bank in a suburban area of Bangkok. In 1996 I attended Chulalongkorn University, where I pursued both my bachelor and master degrees in English. It was here that my fascination towards literary arts together with my love of reading were initiated and nurtured. Right after my graduation in 2003, I joined an exchange programme to live and work for a period of four months in Williamsburg, VA, USA. This journey opened my eyes to a wider world. I got to meet many nice people, learn to appreciate different cultures and different ways of thinking. Now, travelling has become the most precious way to spend my spare time although I still enjoy reading, swimming and watching movies.

Vocational Profile

The 2nd of February 2006 will mark my second year of teaching at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Silpakorn University in Nakon Phatom Province. The fact that I have to travel over 100 km each day from my house to the University does not wane my love of teaching. Now I still very much enjoy my classes: Fundamental English; Cultures of the English Speaking Peoples; and especially Literary Reading. Being an English teacher fully allows me to put the knowledge I gained during my school years into practical application, to read extensively and to always develop myself. Besides, it is also a channel to give something back to society. It is one of our University’s objectives to serve the community by giving educational services e.g. free English courses. Last year we provided four of such courses; English in the Office (for secretaries), Cultures of the English Speaking Peoples and English Phonology (for high school teachers) and English for the Police. I was among the staff of all the programmes.

Vocational priorities from GSE experience

Self-development is a required element in being a teacher. My participation in GSE programme is part of my plan for my career path towards professorship. So while in the District I would like to

- to observe English literature classrooms in college atmosphere (my ideal is University of Washington), to sit in drama and poetry classes to learn about techniques of teaching English literature, to meet with English literature teachers and professors to exchange ideas on teaching skills.
- to be exposed to places of cultural significance such as museums, churches, libraries, art exhibitions and theatres. This is because these places are centres of cultural knowledge; history, art, beliefs, architecture, philosophy and way of life
- to meet and make friends with people from a wide diversity of nationalities, experiences, cultures and interests.
