Project Description
As the Tsunami hit the Southern part of Thailand
in the clear morning sky of Sunday 26 December 2004, the disaster
killed more than 240,000 lives.
In Thailand nearly 6,000 lives were lost, 3,000 are still missing,
and more than 20,000 are homeless (nearly all of which lost their
careers and traditional way of life).
The Rotary club of Tongkah would like to recover and re-habit the
way of life for the local people.
At Fisherman Village, Rawai Beach of Phuket, mostly both village
and small fisherman boats were damaged from the disaster. Unfortunately,
the fishermen are very poor, and can't afford the cost of restoring
their boats; important and necessary parts of their life and family.
This is the first priority point, because they really need help
for the recovery of their traditional career. Besides the fisherman
career, most of them earn a living by service to tourists. Such
jobs include arranging trips to visit islands near Phuket, arranging
fishing and snorkeling trips, and providing transportation between
boat to boat and boat to island (or as rental requests).

Update section of Rawai project |
|
It is now 6 months after the Disaster and most
of the villagers and the fisherman who live there have received
donations from tourists and the government. They have received new
boats or their boats have been repaired. Many of them are now able
to go back to work. However, for some (approximately 10 boats),
the donations have not been sufficient to allow them to begin working
again and they require further repairs.
In the past, prior to the tsunami, many fishing
boats were modified for tourism. Following the disaster, the number
of tourists visiting this area has dropped very significantly. These
boats now have to be modified again to be used again by the local
fisherman. The funds that have been received will be used to buy
new engines and fishing equipment for these boats.
